Assignment 1

The Romans

 

The numbers: find out the LATIN words for:

i) 1 to 10

ii) 100

iii) 1000

iv) 1st to 10th

v) once, twice, thrice

 

Find at least three ENGLISH words with the Latin numbers as an element and explain the meaning in English. e.g. "MILLIPEDE - a creature with supposedly one thousand  feet."

 

Roman Numerals

These developed from a tallying system:

Find out the Roman numerals for: 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000.

These are not used in the same way as our decimal place system.

You may need to ask your teacher to explain how the Roman numerals are used to express any number.

Work out what the following numbers are:

XIV, XXVI, XC, XCII, CXIV, MCC, MLXVI, MCMLCCCVIII, MMX

Write out in Roman numerals:

17, 93, 274, 1666, 1988, 2001.

 

Metric System

In the metric system, words derived from LATIN are less than 1 metre.

Write down the words for :

 

1/100 th metre

1/1000 th metre

1/10 th metre

 

Can you give any other examples of units which use the same form? (Think, for example, about weight, capacity ...)
